ENCLOSURE DESIGN
The design of an enclosure for the implantable MBP is an important aspect in the miniaturization process. The enclosure not only protects the system components from the body but also is essential for the safety of the host. Our design and construction of the enclosure conform to the industry standards for implantable devices. The enclosure provides mounting points for all of the internal components as well as external points (suture loops) to secure the device to the chest wall. The internal component mounting configuration includes noise and vibration dampening in order to reduce distraction to the patient during normal operation. As mentioned previously, the medication in the reservoirs must be periodically refilled. Our enclosure design incorporates self-sealing septa into the outer surface to provide an entry point for a needle. Both the enclosure and septa are made of biocompatible materials (titanium and silicone) and will conform to the standards for implantable devices.
