Biography

Area of Expertise: Brain and Spinal Tumors

 

Dr. Philip Gutin completed his undergraduate degree at Tulane University in 1967 and obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. He interned at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was a Resident in Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco from 1972 to 1973 and 1976 to 1979 with three intervening years being spent at the National Cancer Institute. He was a part of the neurosurgical faculty at UCSF from 1979 to 1996 and became a Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, Executive Co-Director of the Brain Tumor Center, and the Fred Lebow Chair in Neuro- Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has also served as the Professor of Neurological Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.


He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Neurosurgical Society of America, and the American Surgical Association.


He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. He is a member of many academic, professional and regulatory committees. His research interests include radiation biology, gene therapy, and the use of agents to block the formation of blood vessels within tumors to stop their growth.
