He joined CSU in 1968 as an adjunct professor initially at Northridge and later at Long Beach. In 1971, he came to Fullerton as an assistant professor of the Department of Quantitative Methods in the SBAE (now Information Systems & Decision Sciences in the College of BAE), immediately after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. In 1976, he moved to the newly established Department of Computer Science and advanced steadily through the ranks ultimately reaching full professor status in 1977.

His association with industry is even longer. He started with doing research at NCSU (BSEE-1966) in the Electrical Engineering Department in digital design. Dr. Michalopoulos' research has received highest recognition with his publications in the most illustrious archival journals of the Computer Science profession, such as IEEE Transactions of Computer Science and IEEE Computer Magazine. He was the Editor of IEEE Computer Magazine for ten years and served as Chair of the Orange County Chapter of IEEE twice for about 10 years in total. Dr. Michalopoulos' work has been presented at numerous national and international conferences from Hawaii to Greece and from Canada to Australia. Dr. Michalopoulos has been awarded a number of prestigious research grants and has worked during several summers for local defense and non-defense research centers, participating in development of hardware and software, utilized in many military and industrial projects including the Space Shuttle, High Energy Lasers and others.
