DR THOMAS CHEN PRESENTS PKC MAGNETIC BREATHER PUMP AT MEETING OF WESTERN NEUROSURGICAL SOCIETY
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA, September 14, 2009 – Pharmaco-Kinesis Corporation (PKC), an advanced medical device company developing smart local drug delivery systems, today reported that Dr. Thomas Chen, a noted neurosurgeon and Chief Oncology Officer of PKC, presented the company’s Magnetic Breather Pump (MBP) at the meeting of the Western Neurosurgical Society in Sunriver Oregon on September 13, 2009.
In his presentation, Dr. Chen described the need for the MBP, its components, and stage of development. The MBP is an implantable pump with a smart catheter that can deliver up to three medications directly to a tumor site or organ, with real time measurement of bioresponse such as VEGF levels, temperature and pressure.
“We are now in the process of miniaturization to reduce the pump to an implantable system that will be tested in-vivo in animal models. Successful completion of animal studies will result in human Phase I studies,” said Dr. Chen.
The MBP under development by PKC is a potentially revolutionary leap forward in the field of local drug delivery. It is the first implantable pump for the treatment of malignant gliomas and other aggressive cancers of the central nervous system. The MBP can potentially enhance the effectiveness of tumor fighting medications, in the hope of increasing patient survivability from these devastating diseases while also improving a patient’s quality of life. The abstract of the MBP study received the prestigious Stryker Award in Neuro-Oncology.
Under the leadership of Josh Shachar, Co-Founder of PKC and Chief Technology Officer, and Frank Adell, Co-Founder and President of the Company, the PKC R&D team is engaged in several product development programs for commercialization of novel smart local drug delivery technologies and advanced devices to measure biological responses.
